On Friday 8 December we will release of our own interpretation of the compelling Melissa Etheridge ballad, This War Is Over, as part of my seasonal appeal in support of Dementia UK. The single will be available on all streaming platforms and YouTube.
As many people know, my mother, Brenda, was diagnosed with dementia in 2020 and helping with my mother’s care has become a major part of my life since then. I have held two previous successful appeals for Dementia UK and hope that the release of this single will persuade people to support the charity as part of their giving at this time of year. My appeal can be found on Justgiving at https://www.justgiving.com/.../rebecca-downes-xmasappeal2023.
Dementia UK provides support to people dealing with dementia. Their specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one.
I have always been a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge, and this song, with its focus on overcoming difficulties, has particular resonance to me because of its themes of personal liberation, resilience and finding hope through adversity.
As with previous seasonal releases, the track is performed by co-songwriter Steve Birkett and me, with the music produced by Steve and mixed and mastered by Steve and his son, Steve Birkett Jnr.
I can't wait for you to hear it! Rebecca xx
